Cogent Communications Group, Inc., incorporated in 1999, is a facilities-based provider of Internet access and Internet Protocol (IP), communications services. The Company’s network is specifically designed and optimized to transmit data using IP. The Company delivers its services primarily to small and medium-sized businesses, communications service providers and other bandwidth-intensive organizations in North America and Europe. The Company offers on-net services in over 175 metropolitan markets. The Company serves over 1,740 on-net buildings of which more than 1,470 are located in North America with the remainder located in Europe and one located in Japan Its on-net service in North America is its Fast Ethernet service, which provides Internet access at 100 megabits per second. It also offers Internet access services at higher speeds of up to ten Gigabits per second. These services are generally used by customers that have businesses, such as Web hosting, that are Internet-based.
The services are generally delivered at data centers and carrier hotels. It also offers colocation services in 43 locations in North America and Europe. Its final on-net service offering is its Point-to-Point or Layer 2 service.
The Company offers its on-net services to customers located in buildings that are physically connected to its network. Because of its integrated network architecture, the Company is not dependent on local telephone companies to serve these on-net customers. The Company provides on-net Internet access to net-centric and corporate customers. Its primary on-net service offered to its corporate customers is Internet access at a speed of 100 Megabits per second. Its corporate customers are located in multi-tenant office buildings and typically include law firms, financial services firms, advertising and marketing firms and other professional services businesses. Its net centric customers include certain bandwidth-intensive users, such as universities, other Internet service providers, telephone companies, cable television companies and commercial content providers. The Company’s off-net services are sold to businesses that are connected to its network primarily by means of last mile access service lines obtained from other carriers, primarily in the form of point-to-point TDM, POS, SDH and/or Carrier Ethernet circuits. Its non-core services include dial-up Internet access services and voice services (only provided in Toronto, Canada).
