Eicher Motors Limited (EML), founded in 1982, is part of the Rs. 12,000 million Eicher Group. The company`s principal activity is to manufacture and sell commercial vehicles, tractors, two wheelers and gears. Its range of products extends from 5T to 16T GVW trucks to Skyline and Voila range of Buses. It is one of the leading manufactures of commercial vehicles in India with a 33% market share in the 7T-11T segment.
EML has its 35,000 units manufacturing facility at Pithampur in Madhya Pradesh. The company has a network of more than 500 contact points throughout India for sales, service and spare parts, backed by around 4,500 trained private mechanics. In 1986, EML entered into a technical and financial collaboration with Mitsubishi Motor Corporation of Japan to manufacture the canter range of vehicles. The agreement with Mitsubishi ended in March ?94 after successful transfer of technology. The company has tied up with Volkswagen to enter the passenger car segment.
During 2004-05, major consolidation took place in the company. Tafe Motors and Tractors Ltd. (TMTL), a wholly owned subsidiary of TAFE acquired the company`s tractor, gear and engines divisions. However, in May 2005 the company acquired 100% share of Design Intent Engineering Inc. (DIE), a company engaged in the business of providing computer aided engineering and design services to tier I and 2 suppliers and OEMs. This acquisition was meant to provide a platform for growth in the engineering services business that has synergies with the company`s commercial vehicles business.
