BUSINESS PROFILE :
Set up in 1962, Chemplast Sanmar Ltd (CSL) (formerly Chemicals & Plastics India Ltd) is the flagship of the Chennai-based Sanmar Group. Chemplast was a diversified group but now focuses only on chemicals with two divisions manufacturing PVC and chlorochemicals respectively i.e: caustic soda, chlorine, solvents, refrigerant gases and silicon wafers. The manufacturing facilities are located at Mettur and Panruti in Tamil Nadu and Karaikal in Pondichery.
The basic feedstock for its PVC plant, ethylene and chlorine, come from its industrial alcohol plant at Panruti and its own chloralkali facilities at Mettur and Karaikal. The chlorochemicals division of Chemplast, itself the result of backward integration by the group. Chemplast?s own salt fields at Vedaranyam supply the salt needed for chlorine manufacture. The electrolysis process of manufacturing chlorine is power-intensive, but Chemplast is fully equipped to generate sufficient captive power to meet its entire requirements. The company is the only producer of battery separator resin in India.
As per Montreal Protocol, sale of Carbon Tetra Chloride (CTC) to Solvents and process agent sector has been phased out effective 1st January '05. Since Chemplast is one of the three producers of CTC in the country, it will receive a share in the compensation for such phase out.
